We need your help..

March 30, 2009

 This is Monise.   She has been coming to the clinic for a few weeks.  She  is 20 years old. She only weighs 50 pounds.  Henley my 5 years old weighs 53 pounds.   She had several large abscesses on her neck.  She could not open her mouth much. The inside of her mouth had lots of sores.  Due to this, she could not eat.  She could drink a little bit at a time.  She  lived in Port-au-Prince.  She went to some hospital in town but none could offer her help.  So she came out here to Cazale and stayed with a family friend.  Both of her parent died several years ago.  She has a few brothers and an aunt.  She walked to the clinic when she could to get her medication.  She became so weak this past week that she could not walk here.  The family said they did not have money to buy the things she needed to drink.  When she came she looked worse.  We did not have a place to give her a bed.  But when we saw her we could not turn her away.  We moved some baby beds around and had room for a bed for her.  She loved the protein shakes that we made for her.  She was happy and her family came to see her each day.  On Saturday night her breathing changed.  She was just not feeling well.   She died on Sunday morning.  We called the family and they came.

We need some help with the burial fees.  The family was able to give $102.50 towards the casket.  The total cost for the casket is$641.00  So we owe $538.50 for the casket.  We found a dress for her that was donated on the last semi container.  The family paid for the grave to be dung and the person that bathed and dressed her.  There were cost for the wake of $33.  This went towards cokes, sprite and pepsi to give those at the wake to drink.  We woudl grealty appreciate any help with this need.  Let me know if you have any questions.  licia@realhopeforhaiti.org  I will let you all know the progress on this very special need.

Psalm 57:9-11 (The Message)

 9-10 I’m thanking you, God, out loud in the streets,
      singing your praises in town and country.
   The deeper your love, the higher it goes;
      every cloud is a flag to your faithfulness.

 11 Soar high in the skies, O God!
      Cover the whole earth with your glory!

School update

March 26, 2009

 Okay this is gross!  Keverly needed a bone for Carmelo to look at in school.   So I must have not been thinking straight that day.  I sent someone up to the local market here in Cazale.  I asked it I could have “a bone” for them to look at for his science class.  About 1 hour later they walked up to my house with this.  YUCK!  A cow’s leg.

march-2-2009-b-047

A think Keverly was a little freaked out by the cow leg.  Carmelo, being a boy, was excited and thought it was funny that we thought it was gross!

march-2-2009-b-046

We had to cut the bone so that they could look inside it.   I am sure that he will never forget that learning adventure!

They have art class everyday for 1 hour.

Trey has been working really hard with his school work.  They have been working through a book that has been great for Trey.  He is reading sentences!

He is on lesson 50, half way through the book, and doing so well.

 Keverly wanted to do something special for this milestone in school.  So he got a new bike!

We are all so happy about the boys and how much they have been improving in school this year.  God sure knew what He Was doing when he sent Keverly to us.  She is a wonderful blessing to our family and RHFH.

Psalm 77:12-14 (The Message)

 11-12 Once again I’ll go over what God has done,
      lay out on the table the ancient wonders;
   I’ll ponder all the things you’ve accomplished,
      and give a long, loving look at your acts.

 13-15 O God! Your way is holy!
      No god is great like God!
   You’re the God who makes things happen;
      you showed everyone what you can do—
   You pulled your people out of the worst kind of trouble,
      rescued the children of Jacob and Joseph.

New children

March 24, 2009

This is Kenley.  He cannot sit up, to weak and sick.  He is 19 months old and weighs 12 pounds.  He has kwashiorkor, look at his legs and feet .  He is not in good shape at all.  His mom was very upset and worried about him.  She said there is not enough food, just no enough to feed everyone.

march-24-2009-a-004

This is Horlando. He is 2 years old and weighs 21 pounds.  His mother died last year.  The father left the child with his mother-in-law and went the the Dominican Republic to find work.  He has been sending money back to the family to take care of his son.  He was talking to one of his friends on the phone and the firend said your kid is almost dead.  He left the DR the next day and came back to Haiti.  He was so upset and crying.  He really loves his son.  He now has lost his job and has a very sick son.  Pray for both of them.

Very painful

march-24-2009-a-014

This is Rakendy.  He is 3 years old and weighs 16 pounds 12 ounces.  He is suffering a cold, vomiting and diar.  He is also in the beginning stages of kwashiorkor. He has been through this before, this makes 4 times that he has suffered from kwashiorkor.

march-8-2009-b-175

Djouly(julie)  is 11 months old and weighs 15 pounds.  He is suffering from kwashiorkor, a cold and does not want to eat.  His mother said that he has been malnourished since he was a month old.  He is eating great and recovering well.

march-8-2009-b-185

This is Dawens.  He is 14 months old and weighs 10 pounds 7 ounces.  His mother said that someone told her not to breastfeed her child because she was itching.  Great idea!  So he has been losing weight for several months.  He has been following the clinic on and off since he was 2 months old.  So when he was 2 months old he weighed 9 pounds 12 ounces.

march-12-2009-a-002

 Many of you might remember Emmanuel.  The Livesay family brought him to us when he was just  21 days old ans weighed  3 pound 11 ounces.  If I remember right, they stopped a few times on the way here to make sure he was still breathing.  He was in bad shape.

God touched his little body and he lived.  He looked the picture below a few months before he returned home.

 Last week the ladies called me and said I needed to go to the gate, there was a sick kid.  I did and I asked the man if it was the first time that he had been to the clinic.  He said no don’t you remember him.  He handed me his card and at teh same time said it was Emmanuel.  I was shocked and so very sad

march-16-2009-b-012

This is Lorvenson.  He is 3 years old and weighs 19 1/2 pounds.  This makes 3 times that he has had kwashiorkor.

Proverbs 14:29-31 (The Message)

 29 Slowness to anger makes for deep understanding;
   a quick-tempered person stockpiles stupidity.

 30 A sound mind makes for a robust body,
   but runaway emotions corrode the bones.

 31 You insult your Maker when you exploit the powerless;
   when you’re kind to the poor, you honor God.

March 24, 2009

Fedna spent almost 3 months in the US to receive life changing surgery.  She stayed with this family and they gave her lots of love and helped her get to all her doctors and hospital appointments.  Fedna returned home to her parents a few weeks ago.  She had lots of gifts from her friends and host family is the US.

Carmelo

March 22, 2009

Wanted to give you and update on Carmelo.  He was admitted to a hospital in Port-au-Prince. It is a very good hospital (and expensive), but I wanted to get the results of his test quickly and see what was going on with him.  He was admitted on Wednesday.  I think I let you know that he had pneumonia.  They also believe that he had dengue fever.   He was on IV fluids and medication for several day.  I went in each morning and spent the day with him.  Enoch spent the night with him.  He was released on Saturday.  He is still weak and tired.  Taking lots of naps.  We want to thank you all for your prayer and concern for him.

Tomorrow we are going to the USCIS office to file an I-130.  This is what we have to do for Carmelo to be able to be a US citizen and travel to the US with us.  We file it and then wait.  Will it be a week, a month, 6 months, a year?  I have heard from a week to a year.  Pray that all goes well tomorrow.  We really, really want to travel to the USA in the next few months.  Will you pray?

Matthew 21:21-22 (The Message)

 21-22But Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Yes—and if you embrace this kingdom life and don’t doubt God, you’ll not only do minor feats like I did to the fig tree, but also triumph over huge obstacles. This mountain, for instance, you’ll tell, ‘Go jump in the lake,’ and it will jump. Absolutely everything, ranging from small to large, as you make it a part of your believing prayer, gets included as you lay hold of God.”

Update on Carmelo

March 19, 2009

We went into town yesterday to the doctor with Carmelo.  They decided to have him stay in the hospital for a few days.  They did lots of tests and for now he has a bad cases of pneumoniaand fluid in his lungs.  They ran lots of other test and we will get the results today. His breathing is still very fast and he is still having some stomach pains.  I will try to keep you updated as I can.  Please continue to pray.  For those of you that have written to me,  I am sorry but I have not had time to even look at my emails.  Please pray for Lori and Keverly again today.  A lot of the main staff will be gone today with other activities and some are sick.  She has a graduation for the literacy class and the team.  I am going to stay with him during the day and come home to the other boys and Enoch is staying with him at night, sleeping in a chair with the cast on his arm :(   More later….
