This is Ceide (child) and Bernitau (papa).  Bernitau has his first son 11 months ago.  He and the mother of the child were not together when he was born.  The mother kept Ceide for 6 months.  She cared for him and then for whatever reason decided that she no longer was going to care for her son.  (If she was here I would ask her why)  She took him and gave him to the father.  The father was planning to leave for the Dominican Republic to find work.  So he left him with his sister.  He went to the Dominican and found work.  It was not easy work, it was hard labor and very tiring.  He called back to Haiti as often as he could and asked how his only son was doing.  Each time the aunt said he was fine.  A week ago he called and they said the Ceide was very sick.  The dad did not know what to do.  He scraped together enough money to come back to Haiti. He loved his son and wanted to make sure he was okay.  It was not an easy trip to get back like getting on a bus or even on a taxi.  He did not have legal papers to be in the Dominican so he had to return over mountain and not through the border where the customs workers were at.  He arrived this past week and went to a clinic close to his home.  That clinic referred him to us.  He arrived here yesterday morning.

His son, who is 11 months old, weighed 15 pounds.  He had been having diar, coughing, fever and vomiting for a few weeks.  He was severely dehydrated and sick.  He was admitted around 11am and Lori put an IV in.  He struggled to stay alive but lost that fight around 2:30pm.

We called his dad to let him know.  He had just arrived back at his house in town.  He got back on a taxi and return to Cazale.  He arrived here around 4pm.  We talked for awhile and he asked to see his son.  I said that was fine and took him into the room where he was wrapped up.  We unwrapped him so the dad could see him.  He talked to his son, he asked him to forgive him, he told him he loved him and then he began crying.  Not a screaming cry, not a normal cry but a cry from the inside of his heart.  It was very hard.  I talked to him as much as I could.  He wanted to see where his son would be buried.  We gave him taxi money to return the next day.  We offered to let him stay here, but he wanted to go back home and let the rest of the family know.  Before he left the clinic staff wanted to pray for him.  He got down on his knees and cried out to God and ask him to help him.  It was very moving for all of us.  We feel so helpless many times to offer someone support when their child has died.  But God is there to get each of us through it.

21 Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
naked I’ll return to the womb of the earth.
