Marlene has been with us since November 19. She was very ill when she arrived. She was suffering from kwashiorkor and multiple other problems. The day she was admitted She weighed 91 pounds. Her lowest weight was 66 pounds. So she lost 25 pounds of water weight. Her mother has been here with her the whole time and has been taking care of her. She has done a wonderful job. She has several other kids but none of them are with her they all live in the Dominican Republic with other people and she has not heard from them for years. This was her only child that she raised from birth. She has been getting worse for the past week or so. The mother did not want her daughter moved into another hospital and requested that we do all we could for her here. She had a feeding tube down and was on oxygen, she was on many medications. But she did not make it. She died last night around midnight.
This has been a difficult time for all of us here. We all loved her so much and wanted her to live. She was alert and talking up until she took her last breath. She told her mom who to give her clothing to and who to give her toys to when she died. Her mother is very upset emotionally that her daughter has died. Marlene was the one that took care of her mother. She went and bought and sold in the market and provided for the two of them. She was only 13 years old. The need today is two-fold. First we need to get her buried today. The casket will be $361.45, men to dig the hole $24.09, someone to do the service, $36.14 that is a total of $421.68 for her burial. The second need is for the mother. We are just not quite sure what to do with her. She will be returning to her house with no one. She will need some help to start over without her daughter. An amount of $50 to $75 US per month for a few months would be life changing for her. We humbly ask these needs of behalf of Marlene’s mother who is mourning the loss of her last child born to her. We thank each of you that read the blog and help with these special needs. A small amount of money can be life changing to this family.
If you would like to help with this need, please let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org ASAP. As I type this we are talking to the casket maker and asking to get the casket on credit believing in faith that this need will be met.
UPDATE: I just talked with Marlene’s mother. She is going to travel back to her hometown, which is by the Dominican Republic. I have asked her to stay here for a few days to see if we can send her home with some funds to help her out. It looks like a one time gift would be better at this time.
AS OF 1:30pm $200 has been pledged
UPDATE AT 7:15PM THE NEED FOR THE BURIAL COST HAS BEEN MET!! PTL! WE ALSO HAVE OVER $500 to send home with the mother. WE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GIVING FOR THIS URGENT NEED.
